How to illuminate a home study corner

How to illuminate a study corner created within the home? In times of pandemic we have been forced to reconceive our spaces and times, learning the logic of smart working or tele-working. Most people who work in an office have had to deal with remote work for many months and have therefore been forced to create a study corner at home: it is not always possible to respond adequately to this need, creating a comfortable, functional home office that guarantees us the best possible professional performance.

The pandemic continues to make itself felt this winter: the omicron variant is forcing thousands of people to return to a remote working regime and the need to create an efficient home office is still a very topical issue.

In this article we will give you some important tips and advice on an essential aspect of creating a comfortable home workstation: we are of course talking about lighting.

Home office in a dedicated room

If you are lucky enough to have a large house that allows you to use an entire room to furnish your home office, it is important to set up your desk near a natural light source - balcony or window.

This will allow you to make use of natural light during daylight hours, optimising energy costs and working in a sustainable way. As far as the installation of artificial light is concerned, it is better to opt for a traditional solution, setting up the light source on the ceiling: choose a modern LED ceiling light that can provide homogeneous and not soft light. With this solution you will be able to enjoy good lighting in every point of the room and in a homogeneous way, without creating unnecessary shadows.

If the room dedicated to your home office is particularly large, you can also decide to set up a floor lamp in the corner opposite the one where the desk is positioned. This will create two separate atmospheres in the room.

A fundamental aspect is then the choice of the right desk lamp: in this regard it is good to remember that not all desk lamps are suitable for reading and writing and therefore for working on a computer.

Choose a desk lamp with direct light and a neutral colour. Our recommendation is to buy a lamp with 3000 to 4000°K LED light. Avoid lights that are too hot or, on the contrary, too cold, which would strain your eyes too much. If you choose an LED table lamp, you can leave it on for many hours and still save energy. Another piece of advice is to buy a lamp that can be oriented and directed: the position on the desk must in any case be lateral with respect to the work surface.

Home office corner in a room used for other purposes

Most people - especially in large Italian cities - do not have the possibility of dedicating an entire room to the creation of their home office. Instead, the compromise is to furnish a small corner of the living room or bedroom as a work/office space.

In this case the lighting rules change: apart from the furniture you decide to set up in your home office corner, the tips for effective lighting are few and simple. An effective and original idea could be to use LED strips to create a diffused light that outlines the space available. The light strips can be inserted between shelves or behind the desk itself.

Even for a small home office corner, the choice of the desk lamp is fundamental. In addition to the advice given in the previous paragraph, in these circumstances you will have to choose a desk lamp that not only performs well but also takes up little space.
