How to clean wooden chairs

Old or modern, rustic or classic, refined or casual, the classic wooden chairs are an important part of the home furnishings and because they are handled daily or used in the dining room or kitchen, they suffer more than other furnishings from the aggressions of dirt and dust. Here are some specific suggestions for cleaning large or small wooden chairs.

The first ones to take into consideration are the suggestions of the manufacturers of our "contemporary" chairs. If, on the other hand, we are lucky enough to have bought or inherited old or even better old chairs, there are several remedies that are suitable for us.

  • To feed the oldest and driest wood, you can use 1/8 of a cup filled with linseed oil, to which 3 drops of lemon or sweet orange essential oil are added. The mixed ingredients are poured in small amounts on a dry cloth to carefully rub the wood until completely absorbed.
  • To clean it and remove the sticky patina of time and sedimented dust, half a cup of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of liquid hand dishwashing liquid, 4 drops of bergamot, geranium or sweet orange essential oil are required. This mixture can be conveniently used with a small sprayer to spray it on a soft cloth with which to rub it.
  • You can clean a wooden chair, as well as a table or shutters, with a simple solution given by equal parts hot water and white vinegar. The cloth used should be freshly damp and should be wiped following the path and direction of the wood grain.

How to remove stains from the wood

Be careful, if they are greasy stains (dark stains caused by edible oil or grease), you will only be able to remove them if they have not penetrated into the deeper layers of the wood. To remove greasy stains and oil stains from the wood, you will need to use a filler or wax similar in colour to the wood complement that you need to repair. Let's see all the details.

How to remove stains from wood

What can I do to remove water, ink, grease or other surface stains from the wood?

OCCORRENT:

  • Shaving blade or cutter blade
  • Cotton pad and soft cloths
  • Essence of turpentine
  • Butter
  • Ash
  • Turpentine

Here is how to remove stains

Scratch the surface of the stain with a razor blade. Work very gently. You will not have to treat the stain from the wood as if it were incrustation, but only remove the most superficial part without scratching or damaging the wood. After cleaning any residue, use softened butter to spread on the stain and the surrounding area. You can use your finger to spread it. Don't worry, you won't make the situation worse. The reason? You'll have to drop sifted ash on the butter when it's still fresh. The ash is alkaline and has a mild abrasive action. This natural mixture will allow you to sand the surface and polish (thanks to the butter) the varnish of the wood. In practice it will be like passing a very delicate abrasive paste.

Rub the damaged part with a cotton ball or soft cloth. Remove the residues of butter and ash using a cloth soaked with turpentine essence, excellent for wood. Make circular movements, you will see the stain disappear.

How to remove water stains from wood

Place a glass on the wooden top and forget about the coaster. The droplets of water or another liquid form a circle right on your table. Don't worry, the action is easier here. To remove water stains from the wood you will have to evaporate the water component, how? With FIRE.

To remove the circular marks left by the glass on the wood, you can use simple alcohol. Pour a little alcohol on the water stain and start a fire, the flame will last a few seconds, just long enough to evaporate the water and remove the stain from the wood. Unfortunately, if the stain stratifies, i.e. if it penetrates into the deeper layers of the wood, you will be forced to sand and proceed with a complete repainting.

Polishing

To polish the wood you can rely on natural products such as beeswax, turpentine and carnauba wax, the use of a walnut. Let's see all the details:

Grandma's remedies: polishing the wood with a walnut

It would seem that rubbing a walnut, without its shell, on the wooden furniture to be pulled back can return a shiny surface, this result would seem to be linked to the oil contained in the walnut itself.

Natural remedies for polishing wood: carnauba wax

It is obtained from the leaves of the Copernicia prunifera, the botanical name of the Palm. Carnauba wax is very popular in many sectors, from food to automotive. It is used to polish everything from food to wood and car bodies. When it comes to polishing wood, it is often mixed with beeswax.

Natural remedies for polishing wood: turpentine

It is an oily vegetable product extracted from trees belonging to the pinophyta division, commonly called conifers, i.e. pine, fir, larch, spruce... Turpentine helps to create a protective and glossy layer on the furniture or wood to be treated.

Natural remedies for polishing wood: shellac

In addition to waxes, shellac can be used to polish furniture and wood in general. Shellac can be applied with a brush, although it is advisable to carefully finish with a pad or wick.

How to polish wood with waxes

There are specific products for polishing wood and wooden furniture on the market. At the time of purchase we recommend that you prefer specific products for wood restoration rather than spray products that polish the wood only temporarily: many spray products passed off as "furniture polish" are actually simple detergents enriched with low percentages of beeswax, on the contrary, wood polishing products are based on natural waxes and have nothing to do with detergents.
