How to furnish a modern mountain chalet

How to furnish a modern mountain chalet, creating a welcoming and comfortable environment, but at the same time dynamic and young? Unlike the classic mountain chalet, characterised by a particularly rustic appearance, the chalet is an environment that is more refined from an aesthetic point of view: the attention to furnishing details in these spaces is in fact greater and usually the choice of contemporary elements is preferred, but still linked to tradition and in a certain sense to the territory.

We are all familiar with the classic style of mountain houses, but with a few small changes it is possible to create an original environment with great personality and a contemporary feel. Obviously, wood will remain the predominant element in the configuration of the spaces: however, it can be combined, for example, with all-glass windows and doors, so as to give the structure a contemporary look.

Let's see below how to proceed when furnishing a modern chalet.

Modern mountain chalets: how to furnish them

What are the details and secrets that can transform a simple mountain chalet into a chic and contemporary environment? Here are our tips and suggestions!

Walls and floor of a mountain chalet

When designing the floor of a contemporary mountain chalet, parquet is almost always the obvious choice. Wood is the most suitable material for the floor of these spaces, because of its great ability to contain heat and give the environment a unique feeling of welcome and comfort typical of this particular mountain context.

If you are particularly cold and fear low temperatures, you can decide to install underfloor heating, which will radiate heat evenly throughout the room.

As far as the walls are concerned, you can also decide to use wood as a covering: our advice in this case is to use a lighter colour than that of the wood of the flooring, so as to interrupt the homogeneity of the colour.

Living room and living area of the chalet

The living area of a mountain chalet must be conceived as a space of total relaxation and tranquillity: therefore focus on large windows that overlook the view and the mountain landscape and allow the entry of warm light throughout the day. The choice of the sofa is fundamental: opt for a Tyrolean model or one with a wooden structure and cotton covering in strictly warm colours. The position of the sofa must be calibrated with that of the fireplace - if present. Provide the sofa with two blankets and some cotton or linen cushions (plain or floral colours, depending on the style of the furnishings in your chalet).

To enrich the environment you can decide to insert in the living area a leather armchair with buttons - Chesterfield model - to give the environment a refined and slightly vintage touch. Place the armchair to the side of the sofa, creating a convivial/conversation corner, facing the fireplace or stove.

To complete the ambience, you will need a minimal wooden table on which to place your magazines and books, as well as a small guide/brochure of the area. The best thing is to decide to dedicate a spring morning to picking mountain flowers, to be prepared before the autumn, in a coloured glass vase on the wooden table.

Chalet kitchen

The kitchen of your mountain chalet should be conceived as an extremely lively and dynamic environment: don't forget that a chalet is a space where relaxation is generally doubled, compared to what we normally indulge in at home. So why not devote ourselves to preparing typical mountain dishes or interesting desserts for our breakfasts or snacks?

To bring the kitchen of the chalet to life, without weighing it down or creating clutter, you could decide to install an island - if space allows. This solution will be ideal for giving you more space to prepare your dishes. And again, in the kitchen of a mountain chalet, there is plenty of room for decoration: cuckoo clocks or ceramic elements.

Finally, for soft lighting, you can opt for an old wrought iron or brass chandelier.

Chalet bedroom

The bedroom of your chalet should also be an extremely cosy space at all times: choose bedding in fairly dark colours - green or brick-coloured - particularly suitable in an alpine context. Wardrobes and bedside tables should never be missing - even an old chest of drawers in front of the bed, perfect for storing blankets and pillows. If space allows, don't forget to place a small sofa in the room - perhaps with a double seat - where you can enjoy the view of the mountains outside. As for the style of the sofa, we advise you to give decorative continuity with the rest of the furniture in the bedroom.

Chalet bathroom

The bathroom of a mountain chalet must be as essential as possible, without sacrificing comfort and functionality. The imperative should be simple shapes, in harmony with the architectural structure of the space and the landscape. The bathroom must be designed to be able to integrate perfectly with the other rooms in the chalet: in this case too, extensive use is made of wood: flooring, walls and if possible exposed beams. To make the wood resistant to humidity in the bathroom, it will be necessary to finish it with a special impregnating treatment - which must be repeated periodically.

When choosing accessories, the same logic must be followed: the objective must always be to create an intimate and reserved environment, characterised by a sober elegance, which cannot be separated from the great attention paid to details.
