Sofa at home: which shape to choose

What shape should you choose for your sofa at home? This is the question of many people who are preparing to buy this furniture and are looking for an element that can meet their standards in terms of comfort and design.

The sofa, together with a few other pieces of furniture, is an essential piece of furniture in a living room: design has evolved over the years, offering us the most varied forms of sofa. Today the market offers us a wide variety of solutions, providing us with furniture characterised by the most diverse forms and stylistic expressions. Here is some important advice to help you choose the most suitable shape for your sofa, by examining the main commercial proposals.

Classic Linear Sofa

The linear sofa probably represents the most classic of the shapes that characterise this furniture. Linear sofas are usually available with 2 or 3 seats; however, it is possible to find larger linear sofas on the market, even for 5, 6 people and more.

This type of solution certainly represents an extremely comfortable form that allows the sofa to be used as a single element or alternatively coupled with armchairs or another sofa. With the help of a linear sofa, you can create an extremely functional living room, perfect for a large family or for those who love to receive guests often and willingly.

Where to place the linear sofa? This type of furniture can be placed where you prefer: in the centre of the living room or in a place dedicated to entertainment and conversation, or even in the classic position in front of the television or fireplace.

An important advantage of linear sofas is their size: on the market it is possible to purchase linear sofas with limited depth (about 80 or 90 cm): these sofas are however comfortable in the seat and perfect to be placed in not particularly large rooms.

Peninsula sofa

The peninsula sofa is a variation of the classic linear sofa. This furniture has been in vogue for many years. Very interesting from a stylistic point of view, and capable of expressing itself in great comfort and functionality, is the sofa with a peninsula and attached chaise longue: this furniture allows us to lie down, offering us maximum comfort and relaxation. The sofa with peninsula is usually placed next to the wall, but it can also be easily arranged in the centre of the room. The dimensions of a sofa with peninsula can be very different: the depth is usually the equivalent of the sofa cushions, even if it is possible to find furniture with more important depths on the market.

As far as length is concerned, the solutions are varied: you can purchase sofas with peninsula on which it is possible to lie down or alternatively sofas characterised by shorter lengths.

Daybed sofa

Continuing our journey to discover the various types of sofa, we discover the daybed sofa: this is practically a linear sofa characterised by a different concept. In a few words, the daybed sofa presents a seat that is halfway between a bed and a sofa, due to its characteristic elegant and sophisticated informality.

It will be possible to use this sofa as a bed for an afternoon rest or for a guest. The dimensions of a daybed sofa usually correspond to those of a normal mattress: 90 cm X 190 or 200.

Corner or L-shaped sofa

This type of sofa is usually found in modern and contemporary homes, characterised by open-plan environments or open spaces, used for different functions. Due to their characteristics, corner sofas are particularly suitable for conviviality and socialising. Taking up no more space than two linear sofas placed side by side, an L-shaped sofa offers more seating and is decidedly more informal. This type of furniture is also the perfect solution for separating two rooms in the same space (link article how to separate the kitchen from the living room).

The characteristic L-shape offers the possibility to place the sofa against the wall, creating the classic sofa corner. Before purchasing a corner sofa, however, you must carefully consider the space in which you intend to place this furniture: this solution is often and willingly unable to adapt to particularly limited spaces. From a visual point of view, an L-shaped sofa occupies more space than two linear sofas. At this point, many will ask themselves: how can a corner sofa be divided? Since an L-shaped sofa cannot be divided, it sometimes represents a problem should you decide to organise your space in a different way.

C-shaped sofa

A C-shaped sofa represents the ideal furnishing solution for environments characterised by large dimensions. This type of sofa is decidedly formal. C-shaped sofas are frequently seen in luxurious homes and hotels.

Just like the L-shaped sofa, the C-shaped sofa is also a piece of furniture that recalls conviviality and moments spent together. Unlike a corner sofa, the C-shaped sofa necessarily requires a lot of space, otherwise it is better to leave these solutions to hotel lobbies.

Island sofa

Island sofas are extremely modern, practical and functional furniture solutions. In these sofas, it is possible to sit on more than one side: for this reason, the island sofa must be placed in the centre of the room.

This sofa is also perfect for those who wish to create a relaxing and carefree atmosphere in their spaces. The shape of these sofas is often irregular, in order to allow more than one way of sitting: convenience and comfort represent the main advantage of an island sofa.

An island sofa can be integrated with the addition of an ottoman. This type of sofa is particularly suitable for young, dynamic homes: however, it is necessary to have relatively large spaces, since the island sofa is much more than a sofa, but a true integration area within one's own space.

Modular sectional sofa

Modular sectional sofas are furniture made up of individual elements (seat type corner, side, chaise longue, etc.). The combination of the individual elements gives rise to the sofa, formed according to one's needs and requirements (more or less bulky).

The main advantage of a modular sofa is represented by the many possibilities of customisation: it is possible to create a classic sofa with back and armrests or, alternatively, a sofa characterised by more modern shapes. Modular sofas express their full potential when you give free rein to your creativity, creating modern furniture with a strong stylistic personality.

Sculptural sofa

Sculptural sofas are particularly eccentric and original pieces of furniture: they are usually designer pieces. Due to their particular shape, these sofas cannot be placed in one of the categories described in the previous paragraphs. It is precisely the shape of these pieces of furniture that is the characteristic element and synonymous with great originality.
